Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal batted with intent in their 66-run stand for the third wicket at Edgbaston on the opening day of the second Test.
India ended the day on 310 runs for five wickets with Shubman Gill unbeaten on 114 runs off 216 deliveries with 12 hits to the fence.
Shubman Gill joined the likes of Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli to score centuries in consecutive matches as Test captain. With wickets falling around him, the Indian skipper played a mature innings which was praised by the cricketing fraternity.
Gill-Jaiswal Praised By Former Indian Cricketers
Former Indian cricketers Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif among others came together to praise the young Indian batting duo. They also termed them as the batting future of Indian cricket.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was lured into a shot outside the off stump by Ben Stokes just after lunch as he missed his sixth Test century. However, till the time he played, he showed great application and concentration.
“@ybj_19 set the tone from ball one. He was positive, fearless and smartly aggressive. @ShubmanGill was cool as ever, calm under pressure, solid in defence and in total control. Classy knocks from both. Well played, boys!” Tendulkar wrote.
“Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli and now Shubman Gill... India is always blessed to have a solid world-class batsman at No. 4. May this continue forever,” Kaif posted praising the duo.
“When responsibility calls, some rise and some soar! @ShubmanGill just became one of the rare few to score consecutive hundreds as Test captain! A calm head, a bold bat and a hunger to lead by example,” wrote Yuvraj.
“Being India's number 4 and Test captain comes with a different pressure altogether. Really good to see it has not affected his batting one bit, in fact it's elevated it,” wrote former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer praising the youngsters.

India ended day 1 on 310 runs for five wickets with Shubman Gill sharing an unbeaten 99-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja (41 runs off 67 balls). India still have Washington Sundar to follow and the tailenders. India would like to add another 200 runs to the total with Gill and Jadeja needing to continue their good work to start the day.
