Shubman Gill, the newly appointed Test skipper has a job on his hands when he will lead the young Indian side in the upcoming Test series against England.

The Test series starts from June 20 with the first Test at Headingly. The series also kickstarts the WTC 22025-27 campaign for both teams. This is a crucial Test series for India as their Test team is on a transition and it will be interesting to see how it transpires in England.

The BCCI was taken aback by the sudden retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the format earlier this month. The selectors were running a race against time to name their new Test skipper and they finally zeroed in on Shubman Gill.

Now the former Indian legendary skipper Kapil Dev has broken his silence on Gill being appointed as the new Test skipper of the side. Talking to Sportstar, Kapil Dev has placed his faith in Shubman Gill predicting him to be successful in England.

“This is a new assignment, and I only look at the positive side of it. It does not matter what his average was in the previous tour to England. Let us not talk negative. He has been picked based on his potential, and I know he would excel. It won’t be easy. It is never easy in England and Australia, but someone must take responsibility" said Kapil Dev.
"The selectors have weighed all the strong points and made him the captain with a purpose, a long-term investment. He will need the support of the team and the fans. He is young and will learn to give his best and bring the best out of the boys. For me, Gill is a player ready to take on the world. With support from (Jasprit) Bumrah, I am sure Gill will emerge as a strong captain," he further added.

Shubman Gill is still fairly young into his Test career. Overall, in 32 Test matches since making his debut in 2020, Gill has scored 1893 runs at an average of 35 with five fifties and seven hundreds in the format. However, in England, his average is not good at all scoring just 88 runs in six innings at an average of 14.66.
