IPL 2025 Qualification Scenario: What does Sunrisers Hyderabad need to do to make it to IPL 2025 Playoffs?

Sunrirsers Hyderabad

Once considered a strong contender for the IPL 2025 trophy, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have turned out to be pretenders after their first match. Their once-dominant squad has been repeatedly exposed by their opponents this season. Last year, SRH was the runner-up, boasting an impressive batting lineup that averaged over 200 runs in many high-scoring matches, particularly at home. However, their hopes to replicate that performance this season have fallen flat, as they have only managed to win 3 out of the 9 matches they have played so far. Currently sitting in 9th place on the points table, let’s examine the detailed qualification scenario for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2025.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Performance So Far

At the start of the season, many predicted SRH would be title contenders, but it seems that jinxed them from the very first match. They started strong by posting the highest IPL total of 286/6 and won that match against the Rajasthan Royals by 44 runs. Unfortunately, what followed was a downward spiral, as they lost 4 consecutive matches. The top order, once trusted to consistently deliver, has struggled to convert starts into substantial scores, which has exposed their middle order. Although Abhishek Sharma scored a match-winning century against the Punjab Kings, marking what many hoped would be a turning point, the team could not maintain momentum and faced near elimination. However, they recently managed to defeat Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk, keeping their chances for a playoff spot alive, albeit slim.

Qualification Scenario for Sunrisers Hyderabad

The qualification scenario for SRH is quite straightforward. They have won 3 matches out of 9 and have 5 remaining games in the tournament, currently sitting at 6 points. If they win all their remaining matches, they would finish with 16 points, which is the minimum required for qualification, likely securing the 4th position. However, there is a catch: their Net Run Rate (NRR) is currently -1.103, the second lowest in the competition. To qualify, they need to not only win but also to win by significant margins to improve their NRR to positive. Given their current standing, they will face tough competition and might risk missing out on qualification by a narrow margin. SRH has an uphill battle ahead, requiring high performances in every match from this point on.
