Bengaluru is gearing up for a major upgrade in its sporting landscape. Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, has officially unveiled a plan to construct a state-of-the-art stadium capable of hosting up to 60,000 spectators.
The new venue is expected to ease severe pressure on gateways like Chinnaswamy Stadium, which struggles under the weight of massive events as seen on June 4 when victory celebrations after Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title turned deadly, claiming the lives of 11 people and also left several others injured.
With capacity nearly double of Chinnaswamy, it promises enhanced circulation routes, greater fan comfort, and fewer bottlenecks with the government learning their lessons from the recent stampede.

After Chinnaswamy Stampede, Bengaluru to Get New 60,000-Seater Stadium
During the 516th anniversary ceremony of Bengaluru’s founder, Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, Shivakumar confirmed the blueprint for the 60,000-seat stadium. He stated that roughly 50 acres will be dedicated to the project.
"We have finalised land for a new stadium in Bengaluru. The proposed capacity is 60,000 seats. More information will be shared shortly," Shivakumar said as quoted to the reporters.
It was in the shadow of the stampede that Shivakumar made a major announcement: the government would build a brand-new stadium in the city. The decision, he confirmed, was fast-tracked in response to the unfortunate incident outside Chinnaswamy.
The proposal is part of a wider infrastructure push in Bengaluru, with the government earmarking nearly INR 1 lakh crore. The plans involve 40 km of tunnel road, 118 km of flyovers, and an extensive public transport network, all aimed at reducing city traffic, improving access, and creating a greener, more sustainable urban ecosystem.
