Ollie Pope Makes History and Silences Critics Ahead of India Series

Ollie Pope scores his 8th ton against Zimababwe

Ollie Pope became the first Test batter in history to score all eight of his Test centuries against different opposition.

Pope, who recently went through a lean patch in Test cricket, particularly in away matches, faced speculation that he might be dropped from the England squad to face India in June. England captain Ben Stokes had hinted that youngster Jacob Bethell could earn a place in the squad, potentially replacing a batter.

If Bethell is given an opportunity, it is widely expected that he would slot in at number 3, replacing Pope. However, that possibility may now shift following Pope’s performance in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe.

Ollie pope Silences Doubts with Brilliant 171

In that match, Pope scored his first Test century since 2023—his eighth overall. He reached three figures on Day 1 and went on to post a commanding 171 off 166 balls before being dismissed by Tanaka Chivanga on Day 2. His innings included 24 fours and 2 sixes, and he left the field to a standing ovation.

Speaking to the media after his knock, Pope addressed the pressure and questions around his place in the squad:

"Watching those two [Duckett and Crawley] score runs, you don't want to be the one to miss out, so it was nice to get in the flow of things early," Pope told Sky Sports.

He also spoke about staying focused and not letting outside noise affect his mindset:

"We have had some good conversations, and I know where I stand within the hierarchy, which is always good. Communication is really good. I have learnt along the way not to read too much in the media, especially in the lead-up to a series. It doesn't help me. I try to score as many runs as I can and not let that side impact my mental game."

England eyeing a innings victory over Zimbabwe

As for the Test itself, England dominated proceedings by the end of Day 2. They led by 293 runs after enforcing the follow-on. Zimbabwe, in their second innings, had already lost two wickets for just seven runs on the board.

England now looks well-positioned for an innings victory to kickstart their summer with a statement win—just weeks before a major five-match Test series against India.
