Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood, who missed the recent white-ball series against the West Indies, have been added to the T20I and ODI squads for the upcoming series against South Africa.
Mitchell Marsh, Australia’s T20I captain, will lead the side in the ODIs as well, with Pat Cummins rested from the South Africa series. Mitchell Starc has also been rested along with Cummins.
Australia recently won the Test and the T20I series against the West Indies. They won the Test series 3-0 and followed it up with a 5-0 T20I series win.
Mitchell Marsh To Lead Australia In ODIs In Pat Cummins' Absence
Meanwhile, with the ODI retirements of Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell, a few spots have opened up in the ODI side. Mitchell Owen, after impressing in the recent T20I series, has earned his maiden ODI call-up. Cameron Green, who also impressed in the T20Is, is back in the ODI side.
"The smaller squad for a home series, along with the return of Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood, see some players not part of the squad for this Top End series, but all remain in the frame moving forward and we feel the entire group embraced every opportunity," Chair of Selectors George Bailey said.
"We expect that to continue through this series, and the New Zealand and Indian series later this year, as we balance continued opportunities for players and the preparation for the Test summer” he further added.
Head and Hazlewood returned to the T20I squad with Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly and Xavier Bartlett losing their place in the side. Sean Abbott and Tanveer Sangha are also not included in any of the sides.
