ENG vs IND: Yashasvi Jaiswal Set to Break Sunil Gavaskar’s 49-Year-Old Record

Summary

If Yashasvi Jaiswal scores 97 runs at Edgbaston, he will become the fastest Indian ahead of Sunil Gavaskar to score 2000 Test runs.

ENG vs IND: Yashasvi Jaiswal Set to Break Sunil Gavaskar’s 49-Year-Old Record

Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the verge of a special milestone. The young left-hander, who has taken to Test cricket like a natural, needs just 97 more runs to complete 2,000 in the format. If he gets there within the next two Tests, he will become the fastest Indian to reach the mark, breaking a 49-year-old record set by the great Sunil Gavaskar.

Jaiswal's century in the first Test against England at Headingley was among the five hundreds scored by the Indian batters in the match. Batting with maturity beyond his years, he scored 101 in the first innings, giving the visitors a major edge. However, his own fielding performance, batting collapse in both innings and lackluster bowling resulted in a five-wicket defeat.

The century was Yashasvi Jaiswal's fifth in Test cricket. It was a gutsy effort, and it further exemplified his growing reputation as one of India’s most dependable batters in the longest format.

Yashasvi Jaiswal's Red-Hot Form Puts 49-Year-Old Record Within Reach

Jaiswal has 1,903 runs from just 20 Test matches. If he scores 97 runs in the Edgbaston Test, he will cross the 2,000-run mark in his 21st match. That would make him the fastest Indian to get there ahead of Gavaskar who did it in his 23rd match.

India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir is second-fastest currently as he achieved this feat 24 matches, followed by Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag, who did so in 25 Tests.

The all-time record still belongs to Don Bradman, who hit 2,000 in just 15 Tests.

While Jaiswal has made headlines with the bat, he is still growing in other departments. His fielding came under scrutiny at Headingley after he dropped multiple catches.

Pressure on India ahead of Edgbaston Test

The loss at Headingley has left India with more questions than answers. Their bowling looked flat. Several missed chances in the field allowed the hosts to register an easy win.

Moreover, the visiting side will reportedly rest Bumrah in the Edgbaston Test to manage his workload. As India trained for the first time on Friday in Birmingham since their loss in the first Test, Bumrah was spotted in the practice session but did not bowl.
